Russian Folk Art Today

In Soviet times the Government recognized the value of folk art to preserve a sense of national identity. Some artists were considered national treasures. Some forms of folk art, such as lacquer boxes, originated in Soviet times.

The Soviet Government continued to support regional crafts such as niello work, lace making, wood carving and weaving. Many museums collected and displayed contemporary folk art.
