Clay toys

Clay toys ranged in subject matter from archaic animals, human figures and awkwardly humorous creatures to dolls, revealing a keen observation of life and fashion in large towns. Among the most sophisticated were clay figures made in Tula, depicting well-dressed women holding parasols, painted in subtle colors, each with a natural, individual expression. These figures are similar to wooden ones made in Sergiev Posad depicting fashionable ladies and cavaliers or hussars, painted to show the exact details of a uniform or dress.
