Distaff with "Posidelki" Detail
In fall and winter evenings, when villagers had time free from fieldwork,
young men and women got together to socialize. Such evening gatherings were
called posidelki (meaning "to sit a while").
The young people, wearing their best clothes, met at the home of one or
another of the women, or they shared the cost of renting someone's house for
the evening. They sometimes invited people from nearby villages to join
them, but if strangers came there might be a good deal of hostility or even
fights.
