Breadbox and Saltcellar

   The ritual importance of bread and salt in Russian hospitality meant that saltcellars and breadboxes were highly valued and carefully made. Two types of saltcellars, the chair and the swimming bird, originated in the distant past. The chair form, shaped like a princely throne, was most common in central Russia.
