A Village in nothern Russia

The physical layout of Russian villages in the 19th and early 20th centuries varied only slightly from region to region.

Winter in Zaozerye, Arkhangel'sk Province
Summer in Tamitsa, Arkhangel'sk Province

A row of wooden houses lining a river bank or a dirt road, spaced far enough apart to avoid the spread of fire, a church and bathhouse, windmills, storage sheds, and other outbuildings were the main features.
