Facade of a Peasant House (izba).

The first principles of Russian folk architecture can be seen in the wooden peasant house (izba).

The structure of the peasant house reflects the human body. Its base was a simple frame of logs. Its facade was likened to the human face and architectural details to the features of the face. Windows were its eyes; the pediment was its forehead.

The whole was a complex system derived from ancient cosmogony: the house symbolized the center of the universe.

The roof was constructed without nails – a technique developed in the distant past and practiced until the late 19th century.

Although the basic plan of the izba was found all over Russia, various regions emphasized special features.
