The Russians

The map shows Russia at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. This is the period when many objects in the exhibition were created.

The huge territory of Russia—from Europe to the Pacific Ocean—was inhabited by Russians and many other nationalities (Ukrainians, Belorussians, Jews, the peoples of Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Baltic region and Siberia.)

This exhibition emphasizes the special characteristics of folk culture in two regions of Russia, the central and northern regions.

The inhabitants these regions, mainly ethnic Russians of Slavic origin, in 1900 numbered approximately 77 million.

Today there are some 150 million Russians.
