Casket and Padlocks

The village of Pavlovo on the Oka River was one of the best-known centers of Russian metalwork. Miniature padlocks produced there were in fashion in the second half of the 18th century. They served as a decoration on caskets, cases and chests. The techniques used in their production - casting, forging, chasing and engraving - came from the traditions of armour workshops. Padlocks made in the form of flat silhouettes of birds, animals and fantastic creatures served not only as a decoration but also as mascots or talismans.
